The Person Behind The Voice: Morgan Nicole Music

Mozart’s is no stranger to the Austin music scene, and neither is Indie Pop Singer/Songwriter, Morgan Nicole. She may have only been performing at Mozart’s for 1 year now, but she has been heavily involved in the music industry since she was just 12 years old.

If you have heard her play anywhere in town, you know that her voice is incredible and her music so beautiful; but there is even more to her than that!

We asked Morgan the typical Mozart’s Story Questions, and here’s what she has to say:

Favorite Drink at Mozart’s: Iced Latte

Favorite Dessert at Mozart’s: Oreo Cheesecake

We also like to ask all of our guest bloggers what they love about Mozart’s! She said she loves Mozart’s for it’s atmosphere, it’s view of the lake, it’s friendly staff, great coffee, and delicious treats. “I love hanging out and playing on the beautiful deck with all the lights. It’s always a friendly and supportive crowd”, says Morgan.

“Mozart’s represents everything great about Austin. It supports the live music scene, the college crowd, families, and even business people who come to work and enjoy the atmosphere.” We couldn’t agree more with you!

A fun fact for you to know is that she has been in Austin since she was 4 years old! She was homeschooled growing up so being present at a coffee shop, on her laptop, surrounded by people is no foreign atmosphere to her. She said she feels right at home here!

Be sure to check out her music online through her site here as well as her Instagram page here.

She will be performing LIVE at Mozart’s again on September 28th. A night you don’t want to miss!

Morgan — thank you for blessing us with your talents and entertaining us while we sip our coffee. We hope to continue this relationship for a long time.

Mozart’s by Day, Superstar by Night: Emily D

Meet Emily DiFranco! From shift supervisor to night manager — Emily is always helping out around our places any way she can.

Emily has been working at Mozart’s for 3 years now. She helps lead our team, sling drinks behind the bar, make the bake case look beautiful, and trains employees.

We just walked up to the bar and asked her what she is drinking right this second. Her answer? An Iced Oat Milk Latte with Honey — YUM! Her go to savory item is always the classic garlic bagel, but when Emily is in the mood for something sweet, she picks up a Snickerdoodle cookie.

Emily is such an asset to the Mozart’s team, but that’s not all she is an asset to. Sometimes she hits the road for months at a time! Not just for fun, but because she has a key role in the up and coming Austin band, TC Superstar.

As choreographer and dancer, Emily spends most of her time outside of Mozart’s practicing with the band, preparing dance routines for their latest hits, and traveling on tour to perform all over the United States.

If you haven’t heard of TC Superstar, you should absolutely look them up. There is truly nothing like them!

From their Facebook bio, this is what they say about themselves. “TC Superstar is a collaborative performance group fronted by Connor McCampbell. McCampbell’s production style is rooted in modern bedroom pop, but alludes to 80’s synthwave and late 70’s dance music. TC Superstar’s live set features high-energy dance performances choreographed by LB Flett, Emily DiFranco, Francis Rodriguez, and Yuriko Roby — all graduates of the dance program at The University of Texas at Austin. Performing musicians include Julio Correa, Mitchell Webb, and Aaron Chavez.

The band formed in September of 2017 with the release of Masc, an album about notions of masculinity. TC Superstar quickly became a staple of the Austin scene, gigging frequently around the Red River cultural arts district.”

Check them out on their Facebook page here as well as their Instagram for upcoming shows in Austin, tour dates, and more.

We are so proud of Emily and all she is doing! She will forever be part of the Mozart’s family. Oh, and we can’t forget about her adorable cat Leo.

Say hi to Emily next time you’re in and for bonus points, check out one of their shows!

Fall-ing In Love With Our New Fall Menu

With every season comes change, including the Mozart’s Menu! Of course, we will always have our staples items: cakes, cookies, cupcakes, breakfast pastries, and more. But this Fall, we are bringing something new to our bake case. It may not feel like Fall outside just yet here in Austin, TX, but with UT starting back, football season kicking off, Fall is definitely in the air, and we are excited to introduce the new menu to you.

Eclairs may be the biggest change entering the menu this season! This is something new for us all. From your traditional fall pumpkin flavor to a sultry sweet raspberry, these eclairs are sure to catch your eye (and capture your taste buds!). They are a little larger than average and have a sweet, crunchy crust baked into the top. Did someone say delicious?!

Moving on, we’ve added a new cupcake to the line up: Hummingbird Cake! There are many theories as to why it’s called the name that it is, but the most common is that it has origins in Jamaica. These cupcakes have bananas and pineapple which are sweet and attract hummingbirds! Also, fun fact, hummingbirds are known as the bird of paradise in Jamaica. This cupcake is topped with maple cream cheese frosting.

We also have an apple gingerbread bundt cake and ginger molasses cookies to tie in Fall flavors that match super well with all of the tasty coffee and teas that are popular during this season. The chocolate hazelnut dome also ties in to the Fall flavors with the toasty hazelnut taste.

For the vegan/gluten-free folks, we’ve added new peanut butter chocolate bars that have so much flavor you’ll keep coming back for more.

Our bakery team has worked extremely hard to implement Fall flavors into delicious treats for you to enjoy, and boy did they succeed! Not only are the flavors spot on, but they interesting and whimsical decorations on desserts really encompass all that Fall will bring. We surely are Fall-ing in love with this new menu!

Meet McKenna: Musician, Rower, and Iced Green Tea Lover

McKenna Michels has quite the story. You can find her playing music almost every weekend at Mozart’s, but her journey to get there was more a leap of faith. Here is what McKenna has to say about facing her fears and doing something she has never done before.

“I have two special experiences at Mozart’s. The first is when I met Stacey (one of the owners of Mozart’s Coffee Roasters). I am a musician and had never performed. I had about 3 songs written and wanted to start doing something with them. I had seen music at Mozart’s before and knew it was similar to my sound. So the Saturday before Mother’s Day 2019 I went in and asked how I could play, which was a major leap of faith for me. Stacey listened to my nervous pitch and took the chance to listen to my music. She responded “how about tomorrow?”. For me, this moment was special because it was a major milestone for me to gain the confidence to perform. Mozart’s took a chance on me from day one and gave me the chance to start following my dreams.

There’s more to McKenna than her musical talent. We asked her for some fun facts about herself and she said, “I’m a rower on the University of Texas’s Women’s Rowing team. I’m also majoring in Business Technology, which no one ever expects because I’m a singer! Another thing no one expects, I was classically trained in Opera when I was in high school. I even performed at the Kennedy Center in Washington DC my senior year.” So many talents!

McKenna’s go to order at Mozart’s is definitely an Iced Green Tea. Sometimes she will throw in an Iced Coffee, though. Her go to dessert is hands down the Gluten-Free Cheesecake. She said the White Chocolate on top is “just too good!”.

Another special thing that keeps her coming back to Mozart’s time and time again is the crowd. “Whether I’m performing, studying, enjoying nature, or talking with friends, it’s always an amazing environment. People are incredibly friendly and open to talking to you and truly appreciate the special environment of Mozart’s” says McKenna.

Her biggest supporters? The kids at Mozart’s! “They are always so excited and I sometimes invite them up to the front to sing Disney songs with me. This happened in July, but these girls were my first real fans. They wanted pictures with me, of me, and to play along and sing. It touches my heart every time because I used to be the exact same way, it brings back incredible memories.”

As mentioned above, you can find McKenna playing at Mozart’s almost every weekend. Be sure to follow her on Instagram @mckennamichelsmusic! And guess what… she’s releasing an album later this month so be sure to follow along so you can continue to support her!

McKenna — thank you for being an inspiration to us all. You will always have a family cheering you on here at Mozart’s.

Meet Zina: The Mozart’s Regular Cat

Meeeoww I’m a mixed breed hybrid rescue cat. Officially an F2 Savannah.

My name is West African and means free spirit because my granddad was a 45 pound African Serval.

I’m small for my breed and darker because my great grandmother was a Bengal which comes from an Asian Leopard Cat.

When my human @projectstewritten gave me my 3rd and forever home they told her I’d never be a lap cat, never go on adventures, and probably hide a lot. They were wrong.

We rescued each other. I’m her emotional support Pet and together we go all kinds of places. Car rides, airplanes, and even boats! I still get nervous but I love our adventures.

If you see a kitty stuffed in a back pack around Austin. It’s me. Come say hello 👋

Zina loves to frequent Mozart’s with her human. You can follow along on other Zina adventures by following @zinaagent009 on Instagram!

Firecake and Coffee and Our Independence

Back when our forefathers shouted “… no more taxation without representation”, they were complaining about Britain’s tax on tea.  Well, that’s when coffee became our national drink. It wasn’t a fancy Sumatran pour over or a spiced vanilla latte … just simple black coffee drank by colonists acting out their red-blooded, new-found American patriotism.  At Valley Forge, holed up for 6 months with no hope in sight, Washington turned our first militiamen into real soldiers that would go on to take back town after town from the British. Those troops were saved from complete starvation on primitive baked goods, what they called firecake – a mix of flour, water, a little bit of salt – baked on rocks in the fire.

So, as we celebrate this 4th of July, toast our country’s birthday with some coffee and cake.  It’s a wholly American thing to do.

We think its fitting that on this Independence Day, we’ve been recognized as the Best of the Best for both our Bakery and Coffee Shop.  George Washington might not recognize the coffee … or even the cake. But, we’re proud to be an Austin icon for 25 years, remaining fiercely independent along the way.  God Bless America.

4th of July Celebrations!

To answer your first question, YES! We are going to be open all day on the 4th of July. Our hours are as normal, 7AM – Midnight.

The fourth of July means many different things to many different people. It’s a work day off to go on the lake with family friends you’ve had forever. It’s a reason to head to the beach! It’s a chance to invite people into town to explore the world you live in. Most importantly, it’s typically a day spent celebrating in some form or fashion.

It means many different things for us at Mozart’s, too! We’d love to see you be a part of our 4th of July celebrations. Some that have already begun. You may notice our new 4th of July inspired cookies that are already in the bake case ready for you to eat up or take to your 4th festivities.

We also have Andrew Stone playing live music on our patio from 7:30 PM – 10:30 PM.

We hope to create a place that you can visit not only on special holidays with family and friends in town, but one that you’ll keep coming back to. From our place, to our coffee, to our cafe — there truly is something for everyone. We want to help be a part of your story.

Enjoy your 4th of July! We hope to see at our Lake Austin Abode. Safe travels and loads of fun!

Worth The Distance

We hear Mozart’s stories left and right. We love to not only hear them, but to share them with you! We met Jovannah over Instagram when she expressed her love and devotion for Mozart’s. Here’s what she had to say when asked what keeps her coming back time and time again.

“Vermont, DC, Florida, Georgia, California… my husband and I have been all over the country, and being the coffee fanatics that we are. We make sure to scout out new coffee shops to visit everywhere we go. In my mind I can picture them: walking along the street lined with towering Florida palms; rushing in to escape the chilly winds on Fisherman’s wharf; cozying up by the fireplace in the home converted to a coffee shop. While these are among some of our favorites, there is something special about Mozart’s that keeps us coming back (so much so that we don’t even mind the hour long drive from our home).

Our favorite things about Mozart’s are the atmosphere, and the coffee, of course!

The outdoor area is so inviting with its wide wooden deck, large shady trees, string lights, and a great view of the lake. It is so enjoyable sitting out with a nice iced vanilla latte (my drink of choice), or a cortado (my husbands drink of choice). And hey, our daughter loves it, too! 😉

In addition to the in house drinks, we absolutely love that they offer coffee beans as well! We love that they are freshly roasted and give us a little taste of Mozart’s at home; carrying us over until our next trip!”

Thank you so much for driving the distance and sharing your love of Mozart’s with us. We hope to see you and your family back again soon!

A Mozart’s Love Story : Randi and Jesse

People come to Mozart’s for many different reasons. Whether it’s stopping in on your way out of town or sitting in the same spot under the tree every Sunday — there’s something special about our lakeside abode.

Take it from these two: Randi & Jesse.

On any given day, you may find Randi and her husband Jesse sitting out on the patio. What you may not know about them is that they actually met at Mozart’s! We asked Randi about that day, and this is how it goes. “So my husband and I met accidentally, through a whirlwind of poor timing, (my friend was running late, his parents were in town because he’d just become an attorney) and were destined to be together.  His little dog broke off her leash and attacked my large great dane (puppy at the time!) – (Great Dane, Charlotte, is 6yo now!) and I asked him if this was how he tried to pick up women. He said, on that day, that it was. We began some lighthearted banter –  and we’ve been together since.”

Randi goes on to mention what Mozart’s means to her. “This shop is a home away from home for me.  When my husband and I have family or friends staying at our house, it’s the first place we bring people.  When we need an escape one or both of us will head over.  We can sit and work, focus on what we need to, and are always around kind people and delicious brews.  It’s also a great place to just work quietly, as a lot of my sales job revolves around typing and honing in on proposals, and I can edit and work freely – with the most perfect bottomless drinks in the summer and always-outdoor-months in Austin!”

What a story! Randi says she studied here during undergrad from 2000-2004 and has been frequenting ever since. She says no matter where she goes in life, she will always come back to Mozart’s!

Her go to drink: extra ice, bottomless black tea.  Right amount of caffeine and bite, cold and crisp every time!

Randi and Jesse — your Mozart’s family loves you. Be sure to say hi to them next time you’re at Mozart’s. I’m sure they would love to meet you!

Chloe Youtsey & Black Coffee

“An emerging artist recognized at the Kennedy Center’s 20th Annual Betty Carter Jazz Ahead international residency (Washington D.C.) Chloe Youtsey (pronounced Yahtzee) is making her mark on the local Austin scene. A singer-songwriter, with a taste for jazz, oldies, R&B, bossa nova, and “tasteful pop,” Chloe’s solo career has been marked by 6 years of performing for weddings, restaurants, professional gatherings, private parties, jazz cafes, as well as being an active teacher and musical theater director!  Chloe currently performs both as a soloist and a revolving member of a few jazz groups around Austin and San Antonio.”

Not only has Chloe graced us with her unbelievably beautiful voice during live music at Mozart’s, but she’s written a song about Black Coffee! Here’s what Chloe has to say about her song and how you can listen to it.

““Black Coffee” is actually a three year old song now at this point, and I’d love to re-record it someday in an actual studio…

What you hear was done in one take on piano on a handheld mic stationed just perfectly still with the acoustics of my parent’s bathroom to assist.

Additionally, I recorded the voice bit in the pantry downstairs into the wee hours of the morning so I wouldn’t wake my family up! I recorded it right before I moved to Austin in an attempt to spiffy up my Bandcamp account, which is the only online portfolio I had before my YouTube channel and my website, which is just www.chloeyoutsey.com.

I wrote “Black Coffee” as a double entendre of what a caffeinated drink could do for you on a rainy day as well as what the deep well of someone’s brown eyes could do for you in the night.”

Check out Black Coffee here and also our events page to see when she will be back to play live!
